Why do interviewers lie?

I’ve had a couple first/second rounds where the interviewer says “we’ll be in touch with next steps” after doing pretty well, then they don’t reach out. Also I usually get the techs right but I’ve missed a couple throughout several interviews and the interviewer will says smthn like “yeah that’s exactly right.” Why do they lie?

Unless you start saying a 10 change in depreciation begins with inventory going down, we're not going to correct you because of basic decency, reputation, and other factors. Other factors being the primary driver. If you miss one question, but everyone liked you and vouched for you, what would it say about the firm if you started saying "Hey I missed 3 technicals during my interviews but they still gave me an offer." So in many ways, it's covering our end. This goes a bit to the reputation but imagine a scenario where you're stumbling through a technical, and I cut you off to say "nope you're wrong he's everything you messed up". You would 1) have 0 confidence for the rest of the interview and 2) probably have a terrible connotation of the interviewer/process. We've all been there. From experience, I missed a 3 statement where you bought factory, half debt half equity with PIK interest being 50%. It all balanced at the end, so I thought I got it right. But as I was leaving the interview I was like something seems off. When I went back home and redid it, I figured out what I missed. So, I understand where you're coming from. However, understand the other side. It keeps things friendly and avoids hostile situations. I believe Michael Scott would call this a Win Win.

What are some cues that you did well? I did an interview and they started easy and it got harder and harder and harder. We were supposed to have a few minutes for questions at the end but he just kept asking more technicals. Is that a good sign that it got harder and harder? Or do they usually just run the mill of the course and ask all the questions even if you get them wrong.

Also, do you guys respond to thank you emails? I emailed the people who interviewed me and they all responded along the lines of best of luck and to keep them updated on the process. Is that just the standard to respond and be nice?

Its typically a good sign that you know your shit. My current analyst and associate who hired me confirmed it. I sent them both thank you emails, no response and the associate didn't even remember that I sent one. Dont read too much into thank you email responses.

Thank you. When do you usually hear back after a first round? Was specifically curious since I had a few interviews on Thursday. One place said 2 weeks max but was curious if most people who pass usually hear within the next week.

If they said weeks, wait two weeks. Anecdotally, I was getting coffee with my current analyst when they were recruiting for future interns, and he got really triggered when he got an email from a student asking for updates when he clearly indicated when candidates would hear back.
