Why is there so much hate for UF?
I know UF isn't as prestigious as schools like UVA or Michigan, but it seems to still be a respected flagship and in terms of business, its MSF program has great placements in NYC and their accounting and MBA programs are also pretty good as well. Up until I started browsing I didn't think it was thought of in such a negative light. There were lots of people who respected UF and called it a good school but at the same time I read a bunch of comments about how Florida was "garbage."
Isn't UF overall closely tied with UWashington, OSU, PSU, and Nova in terms of rankings and reputation? They're all Top-50 overall and have similarly ranked business schools. The latter 3 seem to be praised here, but damn, UF seems to be the butt of a lot of jokes on this forum. I know it's not much of a target but I thought with the MSF program sending a lot of their kids to IB in NYC it would at least not be trashed on.
Is Florida actually that bad?
What good are you expecting to come from this question?
As much as one can get from your name.
This forum is really helpful for certain things, but asking questions associated with prestige of a job, university, MBA program etc will just make you insecure. Save questions like that for networking calls with friends / family / alumni in the industry. Their opinions matter far more than a 20 year old know-it-all on this forum.
My advice is always to go to a school where you’ll be most happy. If you get into Princeton, slip into depression, and get bad grades you’re not going to make it anyway. Go to xyz State school, get a leadership position in their investment club, make lots of friends, network with alumni, and get amazing grades, and you’ll find yourself in a good spot.
There are some very obvious perks to going to UVA recruitment-wise, but if you’re not going to like the culture there (or you can’t afford the out of state tuition), don’t put yourself through it for a job you’re not even sure you’re going to like.
Signed, a guy who went to a “garbage” school and got a job on Wall Street
Best comment of the month.
as someone with lots of friends at florida, for IB i think only wells fargo recruits there (and even that is difficult to get into without having an IB internship sophomore year, usually through connections)
For Co2018 the MSF class sent kids to the IB divisions in Wells Fargo, SunTrust, Citi, JP Morgan, Deutsche, and some other roles at a few other companies. Those are already the top students who were in finance if they got into MSF since UF's program only takes its own undergrads, so that's true. They get hooked up with internships early on. A few kids got UBS and Bank of America each year in the past few years, but tbh I'm not sure if it's through recruitment since it's at most like 3 kids each year.
I know BBs don't come to OCR for regular undergraduates but I guess it's still nice to have that for the top students who end up doing MSF.
HOT TAKE: The hate on UF is deserved in my opinion. They walk around the state like they're the best thing that happened to the universe. The truth is UF is a pretty good school, but overall the state of Florida does not have targets for high finance jobs, but of course you can make it by being a standout student from anywhere. Also, Gainesville is a shithole and gators nation still lives in the '07/'08 years when they were winning everything possible.

Prett decent school, awesome sports, great social life/quality of ladies. You can easily make the transition to IB if you're creative&hardworking. So why do you care what people on this site say? If you can make to the same spot as a kid at a core school, while having an SEC college experience why the fuck do u care what people on a fucking internet forum say??
Here's a counter question, why does every fucking kid in undergrad have to post every fucking question they have in the IB section of this forum? Can you all read or are english classes not offered at UF? There's is an "off topic" section for shit like this.
UF is a dope school. I've never had a bad time at an SEC school.
That being said, Florida probably isn't the best place to get an education if you want to end up working in high finance somewhere in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast or New York. Just geographically speaking, top firms in NY, Boston, DC or even Charlotte aren't going to make going all the way down to Gainesville their first stop on the recruiting circuit when there's dozens and dozens of more respected schools with closer proximity.
I wouldn't worry about those UVA/Mich kids.
You have beaches, babes, and a killer tan. They don't.
Work for Raymond James in St. P and move on already bro.
Yeah you can get into RayJay, Wells or SunTrust that's true. By the way no beach in Gainesville, mostly rednecks with farmer tan...
Geography is the biggest problem. There are definitely a lot of smart kids but also plenty of dumb ones (it is a state school). Haven't seen too much bad stuff said on here aside from the cocky dudes who hate on any school that isn't H/S/P.
