Why Public Finance?

Hello Fellow Monkeys,

I have been practicing for interviews and networking. I have a few meetings with Public Finance professionals. I find what they do, actually very interesting and would generally be interested in a career in Public Finance. However, When I rehearse why Public Finance in my head my answer seems weak. I mostly focus on how I think capital raising for local municipalities is fullfiling work and being able to help be a catalyst for large public projects is excites me.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to answer Why Public finance?

If you'd like, you can dig deeper into the different types of issuers (beyond general GO for municipalities) that bring bonds to the market (water and sewer, transportation, airports, power, higher education etc). You could talk about how each sub-sector differs from each other and how different metrics impact their ability to repay debt service. Explain how those nuances interest you. Reading Credit rating reports are a good way to get familiar with the lingo/jargon associated with each issuer type.) Being able to comfortably speak about this shows your dedication and interest in the sector which will reflect well on you. In terms of “why public finance” if you go too much beyond what you’ve already mentioned, it can seem like pandering.
