Working 55-hour week increases risk of death: UN
Saw this article on litquidity today.
We are all screwed. seriously working 80-100 hours a week cannot be healthy if 55 is linked to 35% higher chance of stroke what is the % for 90 hours?
“Working more than 55 hours a week increases the risk of death from heart disease and strokes, according to a United Nations study out Monday.
The study concluded that working 55 hours or more per week was associated with an estimated 35 percent increase in the risk of suffering a stroke, and a 17 percent rise in the risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35 to 40 hours.
- 'Higher amongst men' -
The WHO and the ILO estimated that in 2016, 398,000 people died from a stroke and 347,000 from heart disease after working at least 55 hours per week.”
I actually have a different theory. I don’t think it’s the # of hours but the unpredictability in the hours that is associated with high powered careers (which often has longer hours) that leads to higher blood pressure which ultimately leads to higher chance of heart attacks and stroke. So I wouldn’t try to do calculations based on the # of hours a banker works but on the number of times something is requested to be done last minute or the stress of being on call.
With that in mind it really isn’t rocket science that IB isn’t healthy long term (excepting lifestyle groups). That’s why most people leave.
Ya, it's very unfortunate.
55 is more or less a normal job. I worked 50+ hours/week when I was in construction, and it wasn't particularly stressful (although it sucked) because (i) that's not an unreasonable number of hours, (ii) you take no work home w/ you, (iii) you never work weekends (iv) you don't have anxiety attacks about possibly blowing up a high $ transaction, fucking over a client, and getting shit-canned because of it, and (v) you get the benefit of seeing the fruits of your labor. It's really easy to see that 2 mile of a road has been paved in a day, know you have x miles left to go, and feel a sense of accomplishment due to a tangible achievement. Real tough to quantify achievement in IB.
Generally, but not in all cases, working more hourse means that you're likely on call more frequently, stakes for a fuck up are much higher, and you're taking your work home w/ you. Those 3 things reduce quality of life much more than hours worked (to a degree - obviously if you're assembling widgets for 90 hours/week, your life and well-being is an absolute nightmare)
Mentioning widgets brings back memories of Econ 101
yeah no question IB is going to fuck with all of your short and long-term health. It is very important to revisit the tradeoffs frequently.
