Advice and Job Vacancy Leads : Breaking into Investment Banking in the UK with an MSc in International Banking and Finance
Hi everyone,
I recently completed my MSc in International Banking and Finance, and I am passionate about pursuing a career in investment banking here in the UK. I have also completed the Bloomberg Market Concepts and Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals courses to strengthen my understanding of financial markets. I am currently exploring certifications like the CFI Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) to enhance my skills further, but I am wondering if these are sufficient to break into the industry.
I have heard mixed opinions about whether a certification like FMVA is recognized enough in the UK, or if pursuing something like the CFA or ACCA would be more beneficial. Additionally, as an overseas citizen, I am curious to know if there are specific challenges I might face in the UK job market and how to best overcome them.
Also, if anyone knows of any current job vacancies, internship opportunities, or even networking events in the UK that could help me get my foot in the door, I would greatly appreciate any leads or advice.
Any insights on the best path forward, especially from those who have been in a similar position, would be invaluable! Also, any tips on how to prepare for interviews and assessments would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks in advance for your insights!
I will be transparent. Certifications are useless and your chances of breaking directly into IB now at your stage, given that you have already graduated, are close to 0. Unless you have prior IB experiences. Depending on which uni you went to and the grades you obtained, I would consider applying for a target master degree and shoot for summer/off cycle internships. Otherwise, try to land a FT role at a big4 or a small M&A boutique and work your way to the top investment banking spots
