Advice for student seeking internship?
This is my first time posting on here so I’m not sure if this is the way to go about it. I’ve looked at a lot of posts relating to finding internships but everyone’s situation is so unique there’s rarely one size fits all advice. Here’s some background if it matters: I’m a junior in UG majoring in finance and i go to a good public university. No elite private school but you can’t be a slouch and get in either. I transferred from a community college so I didn’t have a university GPA the first semester and pretty much didn’t get a response on any applications. Now I’ve gotten a few first round virtual pre-recorded interviews since the first semester ended and I could put a GPA on my resume, but nothing past that. It’s getting close to summer and I’m getting really worried I won’t have an internship, especially with the state of the industry due to coronavirus. I will be able to take limited RE classes to graduate on time since CC classes don’t transfer great to Universities and this worries me because I don’t know what experience or knowledge I’d leverage to a full-time position without an internship. I’ve gone to every networking event I can through my real estate club and people I’ve talked to are willing to help but it hasn’t led to anything. So my questions are, what advice would you give to find one this late in the game? I’ve been told by someone I met at an event to just cold call mid-size brokerages if it comes down to it and see if I can get in somewhere. Also what can I do to become more knowledgeable and show I have a genuine interest in RE? Any good daily email subscriptions? Courses a college student can afford? Any and all advice is appreciated. CRE is all I want to do but google can only go so far in finding real, valuable information. Thanks in advance.

you are in a unique situation but can be good and bad for you. The good is that even students that had internships may not anymore with companies cutting back, even goldman announced they are shortening the duration of internships this year. The bad is that it will be easier landing a ft role if you have an internship, at least based on my experience.
I would push as hard as you can to meet people and continuously ask for help and introductions. This can be valuable both for an internship and ft role. If your school has a career center, use it. If your school has a real estate department, talk to the professors, they know industry players.
its not the end of the world if you don't land something this summer, but push as hard as you can by applying and following up with each role. USE LINKEDIN, get premium if you have money and start connection with senior people at places you want to work. dont be afraid to reach out. in the meantime, refine your skills and take excel real estate classes, read books, and familiarize yourself with general market information. This will help you be ahead of the rest.
1) LinkedIn (I think RE community is tighter knit, relationships matter); 2) Join school investment fund and cover REITs or smth similar (will portray interest in cap mkts side of things maybe do case competition too); 3) Take off-cycle internship (great way to get exposure with less direct competition for spots); and 4 ) Don’t be in a rush to finish if you have no experience. (Take a 4.5 or 5 year track if you can get a brand name position under your belt).
