Advice on sophomore year recruiting

Hello,

I am a current freshman in one of the stronger dual-degree programs (Penn M&T/Berkeley

M.E.T.), and I am interning at Amazon this upcoming summer.

I wanted to go towards a career in finance as I feel it gives a little more security compared to the average SWE job. I don't mind the initial long hours, and I like being in an environment where I don't just sit and code all day. I was wondering how I should go about recruiting for my sophomore year to best leverage the Amazon internship, along with some consulting club experience and an OK GPA (3.6+). Do these two fields typically cross over nicely? Or should I just take what I got and become a SWE in the future?

To maximize your sophomore year recruiting efforts and leverage your Amazon internship and consulting club experience, here’s a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Leverage Your Amazon Internship

  • Highlight your experience at Amazon as a strong brand name on your resume. Even though it’s not directly finance-related, it demonstrates your ability to work in a high-pressure, results-driven environment.
  • Emphasize transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical thinking. These are highly valued in finance roles.

2. Networking is Key

  • Start networking early. Reach out to alumni, professionals, and peers in finance. Building relationships over 8+ months will make people more willing to push your resume when the time comes.
  • Use your consulting club connections to network with individuals in finance. Consulting and finance often overlap in terms of skill sets, so this can be a natural bridge.

3. Target Sophomore Internships

  • Begin cold-emailing boutique investment banks or local firms for sophomore summer internships. These smaller firms are often more open to hiring sophomores and can provide valuable finance experience.
  • If boutique IB roles are unavailable, consider corporate finance internships at Fortune 500 companies or roles in FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis). These positions can still provide relevant finance exposure.

4. Prepare for Junior Year Recruiting

  • Use your sophomore summer internship to build a strong foundation for junior year recruiting. Having a finance-related internship will make you a more competitive candidate for BB (Bulge Bracket) or MM (Middle Market) firms.
  • Start preparing for technical interviews by learning financial modeling, valuation techniques, and Excel shortcuts. Resources like WSO guides can be invaluable here.

5. Consulting and Finance Overlap

  • Your consulting club experience is a great asset. Both fields value strategic thinking, client interaction, and problem-solving. Highlight these skills in your applications and interviews.
  • If you’re considering a pivot to finance, focus on roles like investment banking, private equity, or corporate strategy, which align well with your consulting background.

6. Keep Your Options Open

  • While finance offers more security compared to SWE (Software Engineering), it’s worth considering tech-focused finance roles, such as working in a tech group at an investment bank or venture capital. These roles can combine your technical background with finance.

7. GPA and Academics

  • A 3.6+ GPA is solid, but aim to improve it if possible. A higher GPA can make a difference in competitive finance recruiting.
  • Take finance-related courses or certifications to demonstrate your interest and build your technical knowledge.

Final Thoughts

Your Amazon internship and consulting club experience provide a strong foundation for finance recruiting. Focus on networking, securing a sophomore internship, and building technical skills to position yourself for success in junior year recruiting. If finance doesn’t work out, your background still makes you a strong candidate for SWE or tech strategy roles.
