Are hedge funds hiring?

So i'm currently at an upper middle market private equity fund right now after a few years in investment banking. I've been interested in public equities, but thought it would be a good experience to learn about investing on the private side. I'm not entirely sure I want to leave unless it's for the right opportunity.

Are funds hiring right now? Does anyone know of good ways to talk to funds unofficially? I realize the type of investing on the public side varies a lot more than private equity. I'm not sure if the right move here is to start "officially" looking until I find out what's right for me or test the waters by reaching out to a few funds. Anyone have any ideas on how to learn more about the different strategies? There is a lot of information online, but it doesn't go in-depth vs. talking to someone doing the job. Thanks.
