Are you good at bullshitting?
Title should maybe be 'Do you think you are unqualified or an inferior candidate for the job, but you manage to get it anyways because of irrelevant factors and feigned interest/overstated credentials?
I feel like I am great at bullshitting and that it is the only thing that has gotten me to where I am (which granted isn't anything extremely impressive but whatever). I go to a non-target (SHIT LOCAL SCHOOL) and have a great GPA (I <3 GRADE INFLATION). I look solid on paper. However, I truly don't know anything about finance, accounting, or economics. Like any questions beyond the very basic ones, I can't answer. I don't do my homework until the Sunday before it's due. I have never been to any meetings of clubs that I am 'involved in'. I played only one game in the intramural team I was on because I'm literally shit at sports. To top it off, I don't have a genuine interest in finance either. I literally don't give a fuck about it.
However, probably due to the idiotic way interviews are conducted, I manage to come across as smart, productive, and energetic. The behavioral questions truly do nothing to tell you what a candidate is like, and for my recent job offer (nothing crazy but it pays like 70-80k in a VHCOL city), I literally did not prepare for even a minute. You can make up an answer and there's no way to verify if it's true. I say shit like "I am really passionate about working with clients! Learning more about XYZ, blah blah", which is a lie. I am literally a diagnosed autist. I legit have no friends and have never been in a relationship. I am addicted to the internet.
Anyways, I still think I am good at bullshitting. Sometimes I think I get jobs because I am a girl, with an 'ethnic sounding' name (but I'm European and born decently well off, Lol), and because I am strategic about my makeup and lighting on zoom interviews.
Does anyone else feel like this?
bs'd my way to a top bucket bonus last year, have absolutely winged my entire way thru life but i will say it stresses the hell outta me bc i feel like at some point its gonna catch up to me and my lucks gonna run out. lol.
That's how I feel. Like if someone asks the right question, they'll find out that I don't know shit or I'm not the way that I seem, and everything will be revealed. Congrats on the bonus though.
That's the thing about bullshitting though, you're trying to appear as convincing as possible. In a lot of situations, it's definitely going to help to finally learn whatever the thing is, especially if the job is focused on it. This is mainly because if you actually want to be eventually successful, but also if you want to stay at a place, you'll want to give the appearance of being somewhat competent (this depends on specific jobs). At higher levels, you're going to have to focus more on building relationships, and no one is going to want to do that with a bullshitter. Bullshitting, like everything, has to be done tastefully.
Case in point: why do you think George in Seinfeld is as neurotic as he is? It's because he lies all the time but can't keep a secret
Fake it till you make it. I wouldn’t say I’m all that smart, I’m just super curious so I’m always reading. I’ve never prepared for an interview in my life and they always seem to go very well, all because I can bullshit. I’ve never lied about anything but I’m super good at controlling the conversation and steering it where I want it to go. You’d be leaving chips on the table if you didn’t use a skill like that.
.
Being attractive also helps significantly
Yeah, I think this is a definitely a component.
No, I fell morally wrong for some reason, this was a problem for several aspects of my life. How can people oversell themselves and not fell bad? Maybe I am weird/autistic.
I don't feel bad exactly, I just feel afraid to be found out.
I am not sure if you can get found out. I would bet that most highly successful people do the same and they even call it a skill.
Maybe you have a conscience.

If I wasn't I would be out of a job.
I hope so. I want to be a CRE broker after all.
Buldge Bracket level.
Sounds like a diversity hire
This post quite literally sounds like me... it's truly uncanny lol
