‘Are you interviewing anywhere else?’
What is the right way to approach this questions. I obviously am, but why is this question TRULY asked - do the firms want to know how quickly to move? I obviously want to know ASAP but have no idea what to respond with in a way that would hurry them along.
I just always say yes
The way I think about it is that if they ask/you tell them where you're interviewing, your answer tells them 1) if your getting looks by their competitors you're "in demand"/ at least somewhat desirable as a candidate and 2) if your focused in your job search or not ie. if you've been talking to CBRE about how much you want to be in investment sales but you say you're interviewing at x y and z developers, that may put you behind someone who says they're also talking to Cushman and JLL.
The second point obviously matters less when you're interviewing for internships and gets much more important as you work up the ladder
Is it bad to be honest and say no given how slow the market is ?
Always say yes. Companies are lame and risk averse and they want to know that they aren't the only ones taking a shot on you.
It's an industry full of lemmings where you never get punished for jumping off a cliff as long as everyone else is also, but if you're the only one jumping, your ass is done if you don't land on your feet.
