Asking for your job back?
This is a throw away account as i post somewhat often.
i turned down an offer post-internship at a decent Asset Management group (~5bn AUM) because i wanted to pursue a more research driven job and because the pay seemed to be low (30k prorated as an intern). Left on good terms (eating with boss later) however found very quickly that the hiring environment for research is pretty lean. i received a few interviews for some firms and got to the superday but they didn't convert. With that said, i am becoming a little panicked. Pursuing research is what i am most interested in but having a job is my primary objective.
Would it be a mistake to contact the boss and try to ask for the offer back? if not, how should i go about bringing up the subject?
Background: Soon to graduate, good GPA, semi-target, nyc-based
**Also, i apologize for the lowercase i's. The keyboard i am using is broken and it seems i cannot capitalize them. Trust me, it bothers me as much as you.
So was the offer 30K, or was that your pay as an intern (i.e. $15.hr)? That would be incredibly low for a FT offer, especially in NYC. If that's the case I would look elsewhere. If that's not the case, and if you are on good terms with your boss, why not ask? Explain your situation, but ultimately reinforce you really want to work for the same company for specific reasons, and not "I tried to pursue better opportunities but it didn't work out."
I don't see any reason not to reach out to him and express interest in working for them. I wouldn't put too much weight on the 30k prorated pay as an intern. Interns can often make much less than FT. Anyways, that would be something that you discuss as the process moves forward
