Background Check Question - Big name economic consulting firm

I know there are a thousand topics on this but i searched and couldn't find any answers. I was accepted to a big name Economic consulting firm and just have to pass my background check. The thing is, the length of time between my first interview (which was late october) and when i was actually accepted (yesterday) was so long that i had to take a temporary position in order to cover bills and student loans. I will leave this position immediately if my offer was finalized, however I have not told the firm. The start date for this position is ASAP.

So my question is, if they run a background check, do they search the SSN and just see everything that has come up under it or do they just look specifically for information that you have given to them?

Also, would my best bet be to explain this situation to HR or to one of the principles that interviewed me.
