Brokerage/Series 7 vs. Private Equity/Search Fund
First of all, I just finished freshman year at a complete non-target school, Drexel University if that helps you, and the only thing that landed me these two internships over this summer was the fact that I have a 3.82 GPA and a 4.00 major GPA. I do not have any previous work experience since I was originally a biology major for the first term. Now the internship that I have worked almost 2 weeks for is at a Wall Street brokerage firm that is willing to sponsor my Series 7 exam and I have already dished out the money required to buy the book. They told me that a freshman with a Series 7 and Wall Street experience is something that other companies would highly desire. I do not plan on staying as a broker and ultimately, want to move into Investment Banking. That is why I am considering taking the latter internship, which I interviewed for and am pretty sure that I nailed it. That one is for a special kind of private equity firm called a search fund and is located in Philadelphia. The problem is that I am pretty sure that they will not sponsor a Series 7, meaning that I might miss out on my chance to get one considering that I do not plan on working as a broker in the future. I heard many investment banking positions take preference of a person with a Series 7. So WSO, do you guys think it is worth it to drop my Wall Street internship at a brokerage firm that is going to sponsor my Series 7 for a Summer Analyst position at a private equity/search fund? Which would give me a better shot at landing a IBD gig in the future especially considering how much of a non-target school I am at and that I am in my freshman year summer? Thank you 3
