Campus Recruiter looking to support students on their applications

Hi there,

I hope you are all well.

I am a campus recruiter and have worked in Banking, Consulting and for a quant trading firm for quite some time now. With the exception of the quant trading firm, I have gained enough experience in all these areas to set up my own coaching business because supporting candidates' journey has always been my favorite part of the job. I've worked with school and college leaver candidates all the way to PhD candidates and my sweet spot is undergraduate applicants (spring week, summer internship, graduate scheme). I would like to add as well that technical questions are not my area of expertise given I am a campus recruiter, but everything else is something I have assessed. Finally the candidates I work very well with are those with strong technical skills (i.e. strong finance/math knowledge) but who are not very good at presenting well in CVs/cover letters, interviews, group exercises, case studies, etc.

I am posting here to find out:

  1. if there would be organic interest from would-be bankers (sales&trading or IBD), consultants or even audit.
  2. The format and content you'd be interested in, what you struggle with, etc.
  3. what you would be willing to pay for these services

As my family is growing, I am leaving my current role and looking to slow down for a while. As such, my preference would be to start quite slow with digital products (How to guides, CV audits, case study reviews, etc.), and eventually move to personalized 1-1s once I am settled.

Let me know your thoughts and have a great weekend everyone!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions for your coaching business:

1. Organic Interest

  • There is definitely interest from aspiring bankers, consultants, and even audit candidates for coaching services, especially for undergraduate applicants targeting spring weeks, summer internships, and graduate schemes. Many candidates struggle with presenting themselves effectively in CVs, cover letters, and interviews, even if they have strong technical skills.
  • Your target audience (students with strong technical skills but weaker soft skills) aligns well with common challenges faced by candidates in these fields.

2. Format and Content

  • Digital Products: Starting with guides and templates is a great idea. Consider offering:
    • How-to Guides: Step-by-step instructions for crafting CVs, cover letters, and preparing for interviews.
    • Case Study Reviews: Detailed breakdowns of common case studies with examples of strong and weak answers.
    • Video Tutorials: Short, engaging videos on topics like group exercises, behavioral interview techniques, and networking strategies.
  • 1-on-1 Services: Once you're ready to scale, personalized coaching sessions for mock interviews, CV reviews, and tailored career advice will be highly valuable.
  • Workshops/Webinars: Hosting group sessions on specific topics (e.g., "How to Ace a Group Exercise" or "Behavioral Interview Masterclass") could also attract interest.

3. Pricing

  • Pricing will depend on the depth of your services and the market you're targeting. Here are some benchmarks based on WSO's offerings:
    • Digital Products:
      • Guides: $50–$100 per guide.
      • Case Study Reviews: $100–$200 per review.
    • 1-on-1 Coaching:
      • CV/cover letter reviews: $100–$150 per session.
      • Mock interviews: $150–$300 per session, depending on duration and depth.
    • Workshops/Webinars: $50–$100 per participant for group sessions.
  • Offering package deals (e.g., a bundle of guides or a combination of digital products and 1-on-1 sessions) can also be appealing.

4. What Candidates Struggle With

  • CVs and Cover Letters: Many candidates fail to tailor their applications effectively or highlight their achievements in a compelling way.
  • Behavioral Interviews: Structuring answers using frameworks like STAR and showcasing soft skills can be challenging.
  • Group Exercises: Candidates often struggle with balancing assertiveness and collaboration.
  • Case Studies: Breaking down problems logically and communicating solutions clearly is a common pain point.

5. Additional Tips

  • Leverage Your Experience: Highlight your background as a campus recruiter in banking, consulting, and quant trading to build credibility.
  • Focus on Results: Showcase testimonials or success stories from candidates you've supported in the past.
  • Scalability: Consider creating a subscription-based model for access to digital products and periodic group coaching sessions.

Your plan to start slow with digital products and transition to personalized coaching is a smart approach, especially as it allows you to balance your growing family responsibilities while building your business. Best of luck with your new venture!
