Can I land a finance job with a Business Management Degree?
I am a recent graduate with a Business Management Degree from a non-target school with a 3.4 GPA and I am trying to land an entry-level finance position. Having really enjoyed corporate finance and capital markets courses during my undergraduate studies I would like to pursue a career in finance. Do I stand a chance to land a position as a Risk Analyst, Financial Analyst, Fixed Income Broker or a job in Private Equity? I am also open to suggestions for other positions that are entry level finance positions. I am looking for some advice as to how to break into an entry level finance position whether it be unpaid internship or assistant position.
First of all, that is the most random list of possible positions I have ever seen - are those just the ones you could think of off-hand? Your first step is to figure out the EXACT position you want... read everything on this site: http://www.careers-in-finance.com. No one here can help you until you know what you want.
Second, why are you just looking for internships now? I just graduated from an absolute non-target with a Finance degree and I only landed a full-time offer because I completed 5 finance internships and was president/officer of numerous clubs/my fraternity.
The reason you don't get a finance position will not be because you earned a Management degree, it will be because other people wanted those positions more than you. As of of now, to be honest, you don't stand a fucking chance. So please, figure out what you want and the people on WSO can help you formulate an action plan to get you there over the next couple of years. It is possible, but you have to really want it.
Those were the jobs I could think of that are entry level, at least to my knowledge. I did two sales related internships while I was in school, not finance related. I have a basic understanding of the functions and duties of the jobs I listed above and I know I need to learn so much more about the industry itself. I would like some advice on some things I could do in my current situation to land an interview. I have applied to many junior analyst positions and so far have not been contacted for an interview. Thank you for the advice.
You need to do a lot more reading and searching.
Simply put, yes. Virtually every company under the sun offers some role in finance. Like eriginal said, do some research, and if you can't narrow it down to just one, at least know every thing there is to know about your options. See if you have anyone in your network in finance...family, friends, etc.
That being said, if you're this uninformed, the odds of you landing a banking job other than Wachovia teller aren't looking too bright. It looks like you googled "finance jobs" or some shit. Jumped from risk analysis to fixed income broker, what is that.
I did not want to limit myself to one job but it sounds like it is better to just try to become most informed about one path. I will narrow the jobs down to one and learn everything I can about that sector/industry. I do not have any people in my network working in finance. I will reach out to alumni and professors. Thank you for the advice.
Will a Bachelor's Degree in Buisness Management be suffice for a career in banking? (Originally Posted: 06/07/2014)
I am in somewhat of a transition in life. After serving 8 years in the U.S. Air Force, I found myself working for corporations that supported the military. Most of these jobs were technical, however the careers seemed logical as all of them were tied into the military.
One day I realized that while those careers may pay well, I did not enjoy them. I realized that my true desire had always been to work in the business or the banking sector. Now I find myself at the age of 36 going back to school for a Bachelor's in Business Management, and I was wondering if that degree will be a suffice starting point for a career in banking? The University I plan on attending has an A.C.B.S.P. business accreditation, and even though an A.A.C.S.B. accreditation is perhaps more coveted, both accreditations are CHEA approved.
While it may sound somewhat ambitious, I truly desire to become an Investment Banker, and I looking for a common format of education and experience required for this career. I will be working in a banking career field soon, and along with a Bachelor's in Business I was wondering if that is a good path towards becoming an Investment Banker.
Thanks ahead of time for any responses.
Michael
I'm not sure that most people will have heard of the accreditations that you mentioned.
What school are you going to? That is the most relevant factor. Your age may be a slight issue, but if you get top grades (3.5+) and go to a school that gets IB recruiting, you definitely have a chance.
You'll need to prove that you are ok with being a bitch to a 28 year old associate. If you can do that, your age shouldn't be an issue. We had a 33 yo ex-military guy in my analyst class.
Also, study finance and accounting. General management likely won't give you sufficient technical skills.
