Canadian Student Help
Hi there,
I'm currently a high school student in Grade 12 in Toronto, and will be attending a target school here in Canada (think Ivey, Queen's) next year.
I have been cold calling/emailing some PWM firms for any employment that they may have for this summer, but no luck as of yet.
I was just wondering if there are any other types of jobs that will be willing to hire a high school senior for the summer. I just want to be working in an office, and not at some McDonald's.
Any other advice would also be greatly appreciated pertaining to Ivey, Schulich, Queen's, etc. (I know that Ivey is the main target for IB here in Canada).

As a grade 12, if you really want to work in an office all summer, I'm pretty sure any office job would be more impressive than what 99% of high school seniors do for summer work. I sold tour bus tickets. If you're dead-set against having fun and being outside, I'd suggest talking to your parent's friends and seeing if anyone needs an office bitch over the summer. Another option that might be more fun and equally impressive to future employers/bschools would be to start and run your own small business (landscaping, painting etc.)
go to an employment agency (not head hunter). they have many menial office jobs.
It wouldn't be full-time during the summer if that's what you're implying.
For me, I'd rather be working than just sitting around doing nothing. I'd still have weekends and nights to go out and drink, it's just that I'd rather be doing something productive with my time as well.
And seeing as how I'm interested in investment banking and will be attending a target, I'd rather get some dim exposure to business if the opportunity comes, since most office/business firms don't think highly of hiring high school students, so if I get any office job, or hopefully PWM, I'd be happy.

If you manage to get a PWM job at a high school graduate I would be incredibly impressed. Why not focus on enjoying your summer and getting ready to Ivey or Queens Comm.
Oh, I will definitely be enjoying my summer on the golf course and on weekends/weeknights.
I'd only be working part-time, about 2-3 days per week.
Still waiting on some of these firms to get back to me. Randomly emailed about 12 in my area.
I doubt it would be an actual PWM job; at best, it'd probably be me working in a PWM office making photocopies/getting coffee. Any experience I can get right now I'd think would be good (hopefully).
If anyone else has any suggestions/recommendations, I'd gladly hear them. Anyone on this board that is currently in investment banking, your thoughts would be helpful.

go have fun this summer. when i finished high school i went to europe for a month then lay by the pool for the other one.
if you need money, become a lifeguard. it looks good for leadership skills on a resume, you get to work outside, and the pay is decent (about $12/hour).
coming from toronto i can tell you it's hard enough getting a decent finance internship after your 3rd year, let alone before even starting university.
