Canadian Target, high GPA, relevant experiences and no Interviews

Hey guys,

I go to a Canadian target (Queens/Ivey) and have been recruiting for summer 2022. The year is now half way and I have gotten zero interviews from the Canadian Globals and Banks in the USA. I did BMOS my first two years, not sure if that is relevant. I have:

  • 3.9 GPA

  • Worked at boutique private equity first summer

  • Currently working in Corporate Development at a very well known company

I have also networked with multiple firms before applying and had great calls with analysts. I have no idea at all why I am not getting any first round interviews at all. The feedback I keep getting is that the process was really competitive, but I am not sure what else I can do to have a better profile.

I would love to hear any advice if possible, I am getting really frustrated at this point and am not sure what else to do.

Thank you everyone

Use your Ivey connections to help you secure interviews - your alumni base is like 90% of Bay Street. It shouldn't be hard at all with your stats. Additionally, might be your interpersonal skills being the issue if you're not converting anything from your network into interviews. Might also be you haven't done enough networking - a lot of people underestimate how much you actually have to network to have a shot. Also doesn't your school have career postings for FT IB? Leverage those?

Hey, thank you so much for your reply. I would be skeptical to say it might be my interpersonal skills leading me to not get interviews from networking calls as they always go on for a long time and they say they will look out for my name. Also, I'm thinking, even without networking, with my profile shouldn't I be getting at least some interviews? Or is the process so competitive now that everyone needs to network for an interview no matter what.

Hey, thank you for the reply. I have not counted the Big 5 out yet, but I did not mention them because they did not start recruiting yet. I am going to be trying my best to recruit for them in the upcoming months. I was really hoping to get a global bank or the USA so that is why I was a bit disappointed.

Why are so many people impractical? Dude just get something in Canada, even if its a bank you hate and then pull an FT. The FT 'market' has NEVER been this great. That being said, keep grinding, it took me over 15 interviews to just break into a superday. Keep striving young king. Oh, by the way, prior to that I got rejected by over 50 different employers. Grind.

Hey, I really appreciate the advice. You are definitely right, if i am not satisfied with what I get this summer, I can always recruit for FT. What I was concerned about was if I am not getting interviews, who is? and what do they have on their resumes what I don't? It seemed like I was doing all the right things to get interviews but it seems it is more competitive than I thought. Thank you again!

send me your resume, give me an email or something or whatever, I want to see it.
