Canadian Trying to Land 2026 SA in HK/UK (Georgetown MSF + Pension Fund Experience)

FYI: clearly used ChatGPT to reformat, dont kill me

Canadian-born Chinese here, currently finishing undergrad at a UK semi-target (think King’s/Edinburgh/St Andrews). I’m trying to piece together a path into IB and could really use some input, especially from anyone with insight into HK/UK recruiting, or who’s worked under a TN visa in the US.

Here’s my situation:

Work Experience (by 2026):

  • 3 LMM IB internships (1 SA in Canada, 2 off-cycle internships in the UK — all at no-name shops, solid experience but nothing prestigious)
  • Starting a 4-month Front Office Investment Team internship at a Canadian pension fund this September — think PE/infra/private credit/public markets — vague for anonymity
  • Secured another 4-month investment internship at a different Canadian pension fund starting Jan 2026 (another asset class from the list above)
  • Both internships are great for the resume and learning, but not expected to convert (they rarely do)
  • So I’ll be recruiting for 2026 summer analyst roles in IB starting this fall

Education:

  • UG: BA from King’s/Edinburgh/St Andrews (semi-target in the UK)
  • MSF: Starting Georgetown’s Master of Finance this fall (2-year, part-time, online — will just say “MSF” on the degree with no online/part-time mention).
    • Got a very good scholarship
    • I know Georgetown’s brand is solid in the US and somewhat in Canada (?) , but not sure how it plays in HK or London as a master student

Recruiting Preferences:

  • HK is my #1 choice: I’m fluent, have no visa issues, and want to be there for personal reasons
    • How is my resume stacking up for HK IB recruiting for 2026 SA?
    • Do they view Georgetown MSF positively at all? What about the undergrad + combined work experience?
    • I don’t care if it’s BB, EB, MM — just want a seat
  • UK is my #2:
    • Again, no visa issues
    • Curious if the Georgetown MSF will help or hinder me here? I’ll still technically be a student when applying so I can go for SA roles
  • US is my last option:
    • Can’t get an F1 (Georgetown MSF doesn’t qualify)
    • Only have access to TN Visa as a Canadian — I know some people have broken in with it but also heard horror stories of it being rejected randomly
    • If I could land at a MM/regional in the South or Midwest, I’d 100% take it — just don’t know how realistic that is timing-wise

Not planning to recruit in Canada — just being honest, I really don’t want to be here long term. Happy to take the pension fund experience as a resume booster and paycheck, but I’m not actively pursuing IB roles in Canada.

Overall:

  • Do I look competitive for HK 2026 SA given my background and experience?
  • Any thoughts on how Georgetown MSF is viewed in HK/UK?
  • For my situation, which market would you prioritize most?
  • Any Canadians successfully using TN to break into the US?

Appreciate any help — been lurking for a while and hoping to get some real insight from people who’ve been through similar paths.

Interesting, thx for the perspective. For those that came from the Msc level, where did they usually go? Like Oxford/LSE/other UK ones or if US which programs? Only cuz the best US Msf i'm aware of are the GTown/Vandy/USC crowd etc (obv excluding MIT), so curious if there where GTown's 'brand' will stack up for me. Also got into Johns Hopkins with a near full ride but I assume that is viewed as lesser (or maybe not)?
