Career advice request.

Hi everyone.

I am in the process of switching careers from operations at a large defense contractor. I just graduated with a Masters in Finance from a decent school, and I have been doing an internship at a private equity firm. I believe that I am about to receive an offer from my current employer for an Earned Value Analyst position. I have started applying to other postings for PE/AM analyst positions as well, but my lack of experience and unconventional work history is really killing my prospects. I am preparing to start the CFA process immediately, to help compensate for this.

I am really concerned that if I take a job in such a niche area that I will be unable to transition into a PE/AM job in the future. I am also open to exploring other career options such as CF, so long as I can continue building off of my finance degree.

I am 29 years old, and not getting any younger.

My question is: Does anyone on this board have any experience with Earned Value Analysis, and would you ever consider it to be an asset for anything related to your current job?

Feel free to be brutally honest, I know that the odds are really stacked against me here.

Hey mike_romiter, I think you deserve a response...heck, everyone does. We're listening, sorry about the delay ...my best guess at places on WSO that could help:

Since I've gotten no responses so far. I'd like to expand this topic just a little bit to include a request for general advice regarding an off topic job.

If anyone wants to add something I would wholly appreciate the help.

If you were not able to go directly into your end goal career path of AM or PE due to tuition reimbursement requirements (I have to stay with my current company for 2 years), would you hold out for a investment position to open up or take something unrelated but much more well respected than your current position (my current position carries zero respect/prestige at the moment).

Or

If you were in a similar position, would you take an FP&A analyst job instead of the above mentioned Earned Value position?
