Columbia GS?

Columbia GS

Columbia GS for finance?

I’m considering transfer to GS but have a few questions before I apply

  1. I saw that GS folks get a similar salary to CC folks and the top hiring companies are virtually equal in prestige and salary. However, do GS folks get inferior roles? For example in investment banking, would a GS grad be more likely to get back or middle office instead of front office? Also, would GS have less opportunities for front office at top investment banks and MBB than Columbia college? Lastly do companies recruit the same and view GS and CC as the same?

  2. Do Columbia GS kids have the same access to on campus recruiting from finance companies and the same resources and opportunities from both recruiting companies and Columbia or do finance companies tell Columbia something like “hey, we wanna recruit at Columbia but only CC and Seas?” Heard this somewhere else but not sure

Bro there’s way too many threads on this to have an entirely new post. You can find all the answers you’re looking for in posts made not too long ago

It’s the same shit, don’t overcompensate and just leave Columbia University on your resume. You have your own unique background that has led to admission to Columbia through a non-traditional application process and it’s amazing to be at Columbia in any capacity. There’s nuances to this obviously but in general it’s a very similar experience

I know but some of the posts don’t answer my questions.

  1. Do GS students have just as good chances for front office at GS, MS, JPM etc?

The second one is my main concern

If you really want a targeted and non-snarky answer to these questions, you should really orient yourself towards other sources that would have interest in answering these type of questions. Get LinkedIn premium and find Columbia alum at the major banks-look for ones with work experience prior to their attendance at Columbia and inmail them. Hit up CCE and ask for someone to walk through these things. Go on the Columbia GS Facebook page and post an intro about yourself and appeal to that group to give you anecdotes about their personal and related friends’ experiences. This forum is not the place to dig into the minutiae of Columbia GS recruiting outcomes and how your background/profile intersects with it.

So much of this is individual dependent. There are a lot of GSers that end up in MO/BO but it’s likely by choice in many circumstances-these jobs pay above average and offer better WLB. Most GS grads are poor so loan pay down is the priority, so taking a $115k job booking trades doesn’t sound so bad while working a 9-5. Are your stats good and your technical prep on point? Then you have a high likelihood of getting a FO gig out of it. Do you have a good sob story and worked full time/part time while grinding a 3.6+ as a fin econ + minor? Good job, you’ll likely get some traction. Are you a veteran? Yea, you’ll probably get a seat if you put in the appropriate effort. Are you an international student that needs sponsorship? Not looking so good for you over the next couple years maybe. Hope this helps.

There is legitimately zero disadvantage for GS compared to CC/SEAS in recruiting. Full stop. All the events are for each school (CC/SEAS/GS). If you get rejected from IB it's because you as a candidate simply weren't good enough. I got an offer, and many other GSers I know are at top investment banks/groups as well. Don't make excuses for your mediocrity. Columbia is a top school so make the most of it.

There's zero difference in recruiting between the schools. That said, no one ever looked at me weird either at school or interviewing because I was the same age as the CC/SEAS kids. Perhaps if you're a non-vet who looks 30 people may raise eyebrows for interviews, but nobody knows the fucking difference. There are GS kids at BX, Carlyle, Evercore, JPM, MS, GS, Citadel, everywhere. Just do well in school and be a normal person while interviewing like everyone else.
