CV Questions / Working in Dallas
Hey everyone, I am a student at Illinois State University. I recently got married, am graduating in about a year, 3.4 GPA (didn't do great in my first year learning German) but am super involved on campus, and have worked my way through college (just for context).
First, I was wondering what I should include on a CV for the near future. I have been president of ISU's finance student org for the last 2 years and grew the organization from 12 paying members to 47 in my two years as president. I luckily was just re-elected for my senior year as well. Aside from that, I have done a ton of speaking on behalf of our Finance department and extra-curricular education (research projects and an MIT certification) to learn about AI. Now I am trying to put together a CV because my one-page resume doesn't feel like it gives enough information anymore. I am wondering if anyone has some good advice on how to form it for the meticulous hiring managers (and HireVue) to not scrap it immediately.
Second, my wife and I would really like to move to Dallas, TX after I finish my bachelor's. Her sister lives down there so our visits to her have included plenty of job spotting and filling my notes up with places to apply, but I would like to hear from some people in the area on the best companies to focus on. I don't need a guaranteed $100k+ right out of college, but would like to have a life more comfortable than before college and a job that keeps me excited. I am interested in investments (either as an analyst and working my way up the PM ladder), or brokering (similar to Schwab's derivatives specialists). That said I am currently working at a mid-sized bank ($5.2bln AUM) as a commercial credit analyst and have really enjoyed a lot of my work there. So as I am sure you've figured from reading this, I am undecided. I would love to go the IB route and my wife said she could live with me working a lot so long as she gets to stay home or continue working as a horse trainer; but application season for post-grad IB is starting ASAP.
Essentially I am just looking for advice from people on getting hired out of college, coming from a non-target with slightly above average grades but a lot of "leadership" experiences. If anyone knows of spots to apply or what to avoid doing, really anything, I would appreciate it. I am the first in my family who has gone to college so I feel a little intimidated looking at the finance field, especially after meeting peers at career fairs and expos. As overconfident as others might see me, I really would appreciate any words of wisdom!
