Do you only need one referral per company?

Hey everyone. Trying to understand how networking plays out during recruiting for ib and I have a question. Is the point of networking simply so you have one person send you a referral link that boosts your application, or are you supposed to have multiple people at a company vouch to hr for you? How does it even work?

Can someone who knows the behind the scenes on how networking helps your process break it down for me?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about how referrals work in the context of investment banking recruiting:

  1. Impact of Networking:

    • Networking is crucial for getting your resume noticed. It can significantly boost your chances of landing an interview.
    • The process can vary across different banks, but generally, having someone on the inside push your resume can make a big difference.
  2. Quantity of Referrals:

    • It's not just about having one person vouch for you. While a single strong referral can be beneficial, having multiple people within the company support your application can further enhance your chances.
    • HR may look for a quantity of referrals, especially if your experience isn't the strongest. More referrals can indicate a higher level of interest and support from within the company.
  3. Role of Analysts and Other Employees:

    • An analyst or any other employee can indeed pull someone through the process by advocating for them. However, the influence of a single individual can vary depending on their position and the company's internal processes.
  4. Networking Strategy:

    • Cast your net broadly and don't just focus on senior people. Your peers and junior employees can also provide valuable referrals.
    • Keep in touch with everyone in your network, not just when you need a job. This can pay dividends over time.
  5. Application Process:

    • Use multiple channels for your application: Handshake, company websites, resume drops, and asking someone to push your resume internally.
    • Networking efforts and potential referrals are closely correlated. A strong network can lead to more referrals and better chances of getting noticed by HR.
