Easiest option to break into: EB BB or MM?
I understand this might be a stupid question. Target rising junior but engineering student. I am quite late to the game so now I am just hoping to get an SA offer from a not so prestigious bank then try again for the harder banks in lateral hire. It seems to me that MM is the easiest? Any advice would be much appreciated here.
I broke into investment banking rather late as well. My advice will be to memorise and understand the technicals to the extent that you are better than the interviewer when it comes to the basic interview questions on valuation, DCF, comps, etc, other than deal-related stuff. Show them that you are keen and genuine.
Honestly I would say getting an offer at a MM, EB, or BB is roughly equally difficult - so just cast a wide net and be sure to target the firms you actually want to work at. Since your from a target it shouldn't be difficult finding alumni / getting responses to cold emails.
Interviews at MMs tend to be more difficult than BBs but less difficult than EBs. It might be harder to actually get the interview at the BB though just based on the number of applicants. Regardless, its going to be difficult. You're best off casting a wide net and recruiting everywhere to maximize your chances.
