EB from non-target with Sophomore IB SA?
I was fortunate enough to land myself in a product group (BB IB financing divison) for a sophomore summer at a great firm, but I go to a non-target that rarely sends kids to EBs.
I'm interested in recruiting for EBs next year, but I was curious if having a strong sophomore internship removes the "non-target" label for these kind of firms. Do they just stick to recruiting from their small handful of target schools, or will a non-target with a strong sophomore internship get looks at boutiques?
Niche question but would love to hear any insight from people at these firms or former sophomore SAs because I'm not sure if I should network at these places. Thanks!
Would definitely recommend networking with EBs assuming your talking about 2024 SA as I think most of the 2023 SA EB processes are done.
I networked with a couple EBs, which had no alum from my non-target, and got interviews. Having a solid sophomore internship will position you well but you will probably have to have a couple contacts push for you to get interviews. Once you get interviews, it’s all on you to perform tho. There isn’t spots reserved for non-targets like many of the target/semi-target schools so you’ll have to come in prepared and impress the interviewers.
Yep it would be for 2024. When you networked with EBs that didn’t have alums, how did you reach out to people. Same frat/ hometown or just saying you are interested in XYZ industry, just curious? Thanks!
Yea something’s along those lines. I wasn’t in a frat, but I reached out around common interests (sports, home state, etc.). You really only need a couple of analysts/associates to push for you to get an interview at some of the EBs (CVP or PJT) because they’re pretty small. Obviously it will give you peace of mind to talk to someone more senior especially at larger EBs like Evercore or Lazard tho.
Yes, it's completely possible. I'm at a nontarget (one that my interviewers literally hadn't heard of) and my sophomore internship was way worse that yours but recruited for a great EB. I think a lot of people from nontargets underestimate themselves and you have a great sophomore internship lined up so there's no reason you shouldn't at least get interviews. The differentiating factor is networking which is so critical for someone with your background. I reached out to random strangers from nontargets and targets. Naturally your response rates will be lower but if you can get them on the phone, that means that they're willing to help in some way.
Also agree with this
In a similar spot. Been told you should network hard at 3-4 “reach” places and if those don’t work fall back on your sophomore SA (assuming you can get a return, most want you to come back for junior summer)
