Employment in UK as a foreigner from Russia. Need advice

Hello!

32M. I work in Russia as a head of the unit dealing with Financial Markets Analysis in a quasi-state organization. After my country unleashed war against Ukraine I left country and tried to find a job in Europe, but it is almost impossible to do it without a work permit.

So I decided to enter a master’s program in UK this year and stay for two more years in order to find an employer who can sponsor my visa.

I have got offers from UCL and Warwick in MSc Finance. I am a CFA Charterholder and have 10 year-work experience. Is it possible to find a job as an asset management analyst in London in my situation after graduation? Or should I go through internship route?

It is very important question for me, because I have wife and little son, who will stay in Russia during my education and I want them to move in the UK next year.

Any good advice or comments in my situation? Is it possible to get a good position and earn enough money to support your family in London?

Thank you!

Graduates from a UK school normally get a work permit, your odds or making it will be higher after that.
What is your plan on internships? How many have you had so far?

I know your situation is a bit "odd" due to the geopolitical situation we are in, with your experience (and rest) you should, in theory, be able to land a job.

There are a lot of Russians in London, the alternative would be to reach out to some of them and ask for a referral & visa sponsorship.

I don't know the odds of getting a visa in London, sorry.

I am not sure those masters programmes are going to be the best for you… I would STRONGLY suggest you apply for the LBS MFin as you seem to be a good fit for it.

The Warwick and UCL ones are pre-experience and are not the best, unfortunately, whereas the LBS MFin is a post experience and has stellar placement in top London banks.

You can also consider an MBA at LBS/INSEAD/Oxford? A chance to build a very strong network in Europe and find likeminded experienced professionals.

Odds are, the WW/UCL programmes are just going to be filled with fresh graduates in their early 20s.

Price wise both MBA and LBS MFin are fairly similar to your offers at WW & UCL.

If you have decent undergrad grades and can get a good GMAT, would strongly suggest you look into the above programmes.

Удачи!

I applied for the LBS MFin, but did not get an offer despite having a GMAT score of 720. I don't consider an MBA because I don't have relevant experience in the commercial sector, and in asset management in particular. My ultimate goal is to find an employer who can sponsor my visa and continue my career in asset/wealth management preferably.
