ER - Hearing back after first round interview?

Hi all,

24M, 1 yr out of target university, decent but not stellar grades, working for a no-name micro boutique (just 2 Directors and me) helping my bosses out with stockbroking / private wealth / ECM. Did the CFA Research Challenge at university and made quite a deep run (won the local round and regional, made it to sub-regional round). Passed CFA L1 recently in top 10%.

Reached out directly to hiring analyst directly at a BB with my CV to 'bypass' HR for an 'entry level' research associate role (to fill a seat that will be vacated in ~6 days, very lean team with just covering analyst and sole associate). He was interested so set up a call and we had a 'chat'. Was a really short chat / interview - 15 min only where he asked why research, stock pitch and asked me to explain revenue / cost drivers and assumptions for the stock pitch. After this, he said that was all the questions he had for me and so I asked him some questions on his background / the firm / role and we talked about that for another 15 min or so.

I think it went pretty positively - he asked to make sure I had applied formally through the website, took the time to explain the interview process, saying potentially a HR call (or not) and then maybe a few more interviews with Head of Research / other analysts / S&T, and lastly a modeling and writing test. It's been 10 business days and still no word back. Granted, we are in the midst of earnings season here but all / most of his coverage has just finished up reporting in the last day or two.

Can anyone here shed some light on what the process is typically like? Have I been dinged or is it just genuinely a slow process especially with reporting season wrapping up? I would've imagined they would be eager to fill that seat given how lean the team is run and how soon till the current associate is leaving. Lastly, should I send a follow-up email?

Appreciate any insight, cheers.

I’ve never personally reached out to an analyst directly, but went through the standard process. Based on my experience, interviewing with multiple firms, they usually provided updates within a day or two. For your case, I am thinking 1) you spoke to the analyst before the official process started or 2) there were lateraling candidates with research experience or more qualified candidates. I don’t think it would be wrong to follow up, but build a mindset to move on if you don’t hear back. There are many other opportunities for you.
