Failed First Year Uni - Options

Hi ya’ll,

I’m going to fail my first year at University, and wanted your perspective on how I can move on from here. Probably going to delete this post soon as it reads like my LinkedIn profile.

Info about me —

.From the UK, studying Law @ Top 5 university

.Graduated top of sixth form/high school cohort - AAAAA at A-Level (one maths based, A), equivalent of 3.9 - 4.0 GPA

.Founder/President of finance-focused society @ my Uni, on the Exec Committee of Econ Soc, Campus Ambassador for Blockchain focused company

.Learning Mandarin (to HSK 4, professional proficiency — aiming to finish coinciding with end of my degree)

.I write for several medium-sized financial websites

.I was raised by single mother who worked at a primary school

Why do I think I failed?

I take full responsibility— I tried to do way too much and did not spend enough time focused on my degree. Secondly, Law is not what I expected — I’m fine with the workload etc., it just bores me and I, personally, don’t find it intellectually stimulating. Thirdly, my family has a history of depression (female side of family have had/currently have depression — I’m a guy) ... in the first term I had finished all the content by mid-November, but after Christmas I just didn’t do anything - some days I would have breakfast, return to bed and go to sleep because I felt as if I didn’t have enough energy to even exist. I haven’t been diagnose with depression etc.

Options?

I plan to end-up working in IB ECM, either at a boutique or bulge-bracket — I’m undecided as of yet. I plan on returning to Uni, unless I can find an apprenticeship/internship with a direct route to IB.

.Reapplication/readmission — unlikely, I failed all my summatives this failing my course. If I were to convince the Board to let me stay on at the Uni I would take Econ/Finance instead of Law — I have been infatuated with IB/Finance in general since last summer.

.Applying to another Uni through clearing — to do Finance/Econ, would be lower tier Uni.

.Apprenticeships— take an internship in commercial banking or related, then continue to work there or take internship and reapply to Uni.

.No apprenticeship— work at Starbucks or equivalent, whilst retail trading, more reading and then reapply for 2019 University admission.

I fear the greatest hurdle will be explaining to employers why I failed my first year.

Sorry about the textual clutter! It’s the first time I’ve put anything about the situation into writing. Thanks in advance for helping me sort out my sorry life :)

Actually, I think your greatest hurdle will be pulling up your GPA after failing a full year. If you don't do that, you won't even get an interview.
