Financial Analyst to IB?

I graduated in May 2023 from a large non-target, and my introduction to IB and high finance came during the summer before my senior year (Late Ik). My pre-graduation experience included one internship in WM. Following graduation, I secured a full-time financial analyst position in the Midwest at a MM bank that engages in investment banking, although not in my current office. I view this role as a stepping stone to my goal of breaking into IB.

I'm eager to chart the best path toward my IB aspirations. Should I consider transitioning into TAS first? Is networking vigorously to land a position in a LMM firm a viable option? Should I contemplate waiting and pursuing an MBA?

I'm open to relocating anywhere in the US and would greatly appreciate any advice.

Hey there! It sounds like you're really motivated to break into investment banking (IB), which is great! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are a few paths you might consider:

  1. Transitioning to Transaction Advisory Services (TAS): This could be a good stepping stone as it would give you relevant experience that is highly valued in IB. It's not a huge leap from TAS to a boutique or a middle market (MM) firm.

  2. Networking: This is key in the finance industry. Start reaching out to people in the industry, attend events, and make connections. This could potentially help you land a position in a lower middle market (LMM) firm.

  3. Pursuing an MBA: If you're considering this route, start studying for the GMAT. A top 15-20 MBA program could give you good access to NYC banking and you should be able to get an Associate role in IB if you're competent. However, this is an expensive route.

  4. Applying to all opportunities: Use online websites like Indeed and LinkedIn. This, along with networking, should draw up some interviews.

Remember, breaking into IB from anywhere takes a decent amount of leg work. Don't feel beaten down if things don't work out immediately. Every interview and every experience will make you better for the next one. Good luck!
