First Year College Internship Help

Hi all,

So a bit of backround on myself, I went to the top secondary school in ireland, scored grades in the 90% percentile, and am doing an undergrad in Business and Economics in Trinity College Dublin which again is the top universtity in Ireland. A lot of my friends are spending the summer travelling etc., but i was wondering how someone with little to no experience could gain an internship in a firm. I would like to go somewhere different like dubai or asia in order for it to stand out on my CV, but I'm unsure how I could put these gears into motion. I have LinkedIn but would people I have mutual connections with care about a cold message out of the blue?

All in all, my question is; how should i go about my search for an internship this summer, bearing in mind i dont want or need it to be in a "Big" company, just something industry specific.
Many many thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps and resources you can use to find an internship, especially if you're looking for opportunities in unique locations like Dubai or Asia:

  1. Cold Emailing and LinkedIn Messaging:

    • Cold Email Template: Use a concise and impactful cold email template. For example:

Dear [Recipient's Name], I am writing to you to see if [Firm Name] is interested in taking an intern in its [Sector/Coverage/Product] team for the summer of [Year]. I am currently a [Year] student at Trinity College Dublin, pursuing a degree in Business and Economics. I have attached my resume and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your team. Kind regards, [Your Name]
    • LinkedIn Messaging: Reach out to professionals on LinkedIn with a brief message expressing your interest in their career path and seeking advice. Example:

Hi [Recipient's Name], My name is [Your Name] and I am a [Year] student at Trinity College Dublin. I am very interested in learning more about your career trajectory to your current position at [Company Name]. I am pursuing a career in Field and am looking for advice. If you have any availability, I would appreciate the chance to chat with you. Best, [Your Name]
  2. Utilize Online Job Boards and Resources:

  3. Networking and Alumni Connections:

    • University Alumni Network: Leverage your university's alumni network to find connections in your desired industry and location. Mention your mutual connection or shared background to make your outreach more personal and effective.
  4. Hunter.io:

    • Use Hunter.io to find out how businesses structure their email addresses and plug in the name of the person you want to contact. This can help you reach out to the right individuals within firms.
  5. Campus Recruitment Events:

    • Attend campus recruitment events to meet potential employers and learn about internship opportunities. These events can also help you build connections and get your foot in the door.

By following these steps and utilizing these resources, you can increase your chances of securing an internship that stands out on your CV, even if it's not with a "Big" company. Good luck with your search!
