Freshman Student-Athlete at HYP - What to do in Freshman Spring?

Hi all,

I am a freshman student-athlete at HYP, who wants to go into investment banking/private equity. I was wondering what I should be doing at this current point to maximize my chances? I sent out probably 50+ cold emails regarding potential freshman summer internships, but haven't had the best of luck. I made it to the final round of this PE firm's application, but didn't get an offer. I have 2-ish leads, but at this current point I am likely to take a job coaching my sport during the summer.

I was wondering what is most optimal to do now? Have sophomore summer applications opened, and should I be focusing on those? Or I do I continue to search for a freshman summer finance internship. I am also planning on starting to network for the firms I would like to do 2027 junior SA at.

Thanks all.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on as a freshman student-athlete at HYP aiming for investment banking or private equity:

  1. Continue Networking Aggressively:

    • Leverage your HYP network, especially alumni who were also student-athletes. This shared background can be a strong connection point.
    • Reach out to alumni from SEO, MLT, and Inroads programs, as they often have experience in finance and are open to mentoring.
    • Keep your cold emails concise and personalized. Mention your student-athlete background, your interest in finance, and your willingness to learn.
  2. Focus on Freshman Summer Opportunities:

    • If finance internships are not materializing, consider roles that align with your story and demonstrate work ethic, leadership, and interest in finance. Coaching your sport is a solid option, as it highlights leadership and dedication.
    • Explore internships at local boutique investment banks, corporate finance roles, or even startups. These experiences can still add value to your resume.
  3. Prepare for Sophomore Summer Applications:

    • While most sophomore summer applications open later, you can start researching firms and programs that hire sophomores.
    • Begin networking with professionals at these firms to build relationships early. This will help when applications open.
  4. Build Your Finance Knowledge:

    • Use your spring semester to deepen your understanding of finance. Read WSO guides, Vault guides, and other resources to prepare for future interviews.
    • Consider taking relevant finance or accounting courses if your schedule allows.
  5. Start Planning for Junior SA Recruiting:

    • It’s great that you’re already thinking about 2027 junior SA roles. Begin identifying target firms and networking with professionals there.
    • Attend info sessions, coffee chats, and any on-campus events hosted by these firms.
  6. Leverage Your Unique Story:

    • As a student-athlete at HYP, you have a unique narrative. Highlight your time management, discipline, and leadership skills in all your interactions and applications.

While it’s disappointing to miss out on some opportunities, remember that persistence and strategic planning will pay off. Keep pushing forward!
