FT 2025 Advice

I landed at a MM PC fund for the summer. Fund is historically iffy with returns so I'm not sure what steps to take to be prepared for the worst case. I want to end up in PC down the line but I know positions out of undergrad are very limited. Idk if i should I be focusing attention on LevFin for FT or a different PC fund. What does the FT recruiting timeline look like for both and which PC funds recruit for FT?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

Steps to Take for Preparation:

  1. Network Extensively:

    • Start building relationships within the industry. Reach out to alumni, attend industry events, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in Private Credit (PC) and Leveraged Finance (LevFin).
  2. Skill Development:

    • Enhance your technical skills, particularly in financial modeling and valuation. Consider taking relevant courses such as the WSO Elite Modeling Package or specific courses on LBO Modeling and Financial Statement Modeling.
  3. Stay Informed:

    • Keep up with industry trends and news. Understanding the market dynamics can help you make informed decisions about your career path.

FT Recruiting Timeline:

  • General Timeline:

    • Full-time recruiting typically starts after summer internships conclude. Banks and funds may begin posting positions in late summer or early fall.
    • Some banks may have openings from January to April, depending on their needs and the outcomes of bonus seasons.
  • Private Credit Funds:

    • Recruiting for full-time positions in PC funds can be less structured and more sporadic compared to investment banking. It’s crucial to stay proactive and keep an eye on job postings and networking opportunities.
  • Leveraged Finance:

    • LevFin positions are often part of the broader investment banking recruiting process. These positions may be posted alongside other IB roles, so keep an eye on the same timelines.

Which Path to Focus On:

  • Private Credit (PC):

    • If your long-term goal is to stay in PC, it might be beneficial to focus on finding another PC fund for full-time. However, given the limited positions, it’s wise to have a backup plan.
  • Leveraged Finance (LevFin):

    • LevFin can be a good alternative as it provides relevant experience and skills that are transferable to PC. It also tends to have a more structured recruiting process, which might increase your chances of landing a position.

PC Funds Recruiting for FT:

  • Specific PC funds that recruit for full-time positions can vary. It’s important to research and identify funds with a history of hiring undergraduates. Networking and informational interviews can also provide insights into which funds are actively recruiting.

Additional Resources:

  • WSO Courses:

    • Consider enrolling in courses like the Private Equity Interview Course or the IB Interview Course to prepare for technical and behavioral questions.
  • WSO Community:

    • Engage with the WSO forums to stay updated on recruiting trends and gather advice from peers and industry professionals.

By following these steps and staying proactive, you can better prepare for the worst-case scenario and increase your chances of landing a full-time position in your desired field.
