Getting a Freshman Summer Internship This Late?
I'm a freshman at a low semi-target (think Fordham, Villanova, Wake Forest) and I've had some trouble finding a summer internship. I recently had an interview and am waiting to hear back from a local capital management firm, but other than that I have no leads. I know that it is really late in the game to be doing this, but how else could I go about finding one? I just need backups in case this internship doesn't end up happening.
I've already emailed all the local wealth / capital management firms in my town and the few over and got no responses minus the one that interviewed me. Would a search fund be wise? I've had trouble getting one off of Searchfunder given that hundreds of kids are applying... is there another way to find these?
Also, how crucial is a freshman summer internship for someone in my position looking to get into IB? Basically non-target (as I mentioned earlier), 4.0 GPA, involvement in on-campus clubs.
Based on the WSO threads and discussions, securing a freshman summer internship, especially in investment banking or related fields, can be challenging but not impossible. Here are some strategies and insights that might help you:
Expand Your Network: Since you've already reached out to local firms, consider expanding your network through LinkedIn. Connect with alumni from your school who are in the industry. Often, they can provide referrals or at least advice on securing internships.
Utilize Your School’s Career Services: Even if your school is a semi-target, the career services office might have connections or resources that can help you find internships. They often have lists of alumni or firms that have previously taken interns from your school.
Consider Alternative Internships: If traditional capital management or IB internships are hard to come by, consider related fields such as financial planning, corporate finance internships within non-finance companies, or even startups that might offer valuable business experience.
Search Funds and Micro PE Firms: While securing a position through platforms like Searchfunder can be competitive, don't discount the value of smaller or less traditional funds like micro PE firms or family offices. These might not be as competitive and can offer significant hands-on experience.
Importance of Freshman Internships: While having an internship after your freshman year can certainly give you a leg up, it’s not absolutely crucial for breaking into IB. Focus on maintaining your GPA and involvement in relevant clubs. These will also be significant factors when you apply for internships in your sophomore or junior year.
Skill Building: In the meantime, consider online courses or certifications (like those from WSO) that can boost your resume and give you practical skills, such as financial modeling.
Cold Emailing/Cold Calling: Since you've had some response from cold emailing, consider continuing this with a broader geographic scope. Personalize your emails to increase your chances of getting a response.
Remember, persistence and creativity in your approach can open up unexpected opportunities. Keep exploring various avenues and stay proactive in your search.
