Got an offer contingent on reference checks - worried about reference checks

Recently got an internship at a mid size firm, but exaggerated some bullet points on my resume and only have ok relationships with most of my previous bosses.

What worries me most is that I also used a work sample I worked on in part at my previous internship and sent that to the firm now hiring me. I'm worried this will be brought up, and I feel like this could have fairly severe consequences. I did have a good relationship with my boss there though, who I put as a reference.

My second reference should be fine but it was just a while ago, and I'm not sure exactly what he'll say. He'll say generally decent things, but it won't be glowing, and I exaggerated slightly on my resume what I did here.

The reference checks also seem more comprehensive than usual transcript and employment date verification, just from some random researching I did.

How do I set myself up/what do I do? I feel like the thing to do right now is leverage the offer quickly into other offers, just to set myself up for a worst case scenario, but honestly the only places that I'm thinking about haven't started interviewing yet even though I have good networking contacts at those places.

First lesson. Don't ever exaggerate ANYTHING on your resume.

  1. Don't put anything on your resume that you can't speak to intelligently.

Hope for the best with that interview, since you can't undo what you have done in regards to bosses and exaggeration. In the meantime, contact other shops, and not just the biggest and the best. Reach out to every finance shop that you can find, and interview with as many as you can. That way, if you don't get this internship, you will most likely have something to fall back on, and you will hone your interviewing skills at the same time.

Frankly not too worried about the exaggeration part. Exaggerations were slight and I can speak to everything intelligently on my resume. I'm more worried that my references are going to make some noise about the exaggerations, and the work sample part. What are your thoughts on that?

Because if you know that only some of them would make noise, then try to exclude from discussion, and if that's not possible, then just hope for the best. As for the sample part, most bosses probably wouldn't have a problem with that, as long as you didn't exaggerate too much.
