got invited to interview and was rejected immediately due to visa sponsorship

Hi all,

Does anyone have an experience that the company doesn't dissuade international applicants to apply in the job description (and they also have records of sponsorship in the past) and then u got dinged when they invited you to first round interview and asked you to confirm that you won't need sponsorship? It just happened to me and made me really sad and annoyed with the fact you are qualified enough to pass initial screening but you didn't make it because you couldn't choose where to be born. Besides, both of us wasted time doing application and reviewing one more candidate's profile.

You have to realize that shit costs money, and a pretty decent amount of it, and increases some regulatory/administrative work. You can't just be 'as good' as the other American's you are going to have to be one of the better/best to justify paying the additional cost. Unless they can undercut your salary, but many shops don't do that because it kind of feels dirty.

I have had a lot of poor experience with this also, but have been able to deal with it (currently in NYC). My advice: get to know the Visa system very well. Depending on where you are from, you might have some options available to you.

Note: when you eventually get to the greencard stage, employers have to do a labor market test and see if a "minimally qualified" (not BEST) candidate in the U.S. can take the job.

Yeah, I know. It sucks, but that's life.
