Graduating in December > Graduating in May?

I was working at a Big 4 firm last year and one of my managers told me that I could consider graduating in December if possible because bonuses and promotions are awarded around late summer/early fall period. There are also less applicants starting in January compared to the typical summer/fall timeline so it's possibly less competitive too. Is there any merit for this in the banking/finance world?
