Hello guys. So I guess I would like some advice on how to proceed. I went to meet an alum the other day for the first time. It was going well, we were outside having a casual smoke. Then, he said I should meet his boss. His boss happened to come out for a smoke as well. We went over, i introduced myself and he said, "Any chance you are related to ___?". I said, "Yeah, thats my dad". He was really surprised and went on to say he had worked with my dad for a while and knows him pretty well. He asked what I was doing in DC and then told me I should apply for an internship with the firm... he mentioned that is a paid position. I said something like, "Sounds very interesting, i will definitely look into it". I felt very good vibes from him.
So, I decided to follow up and email him today, just to say it was good to meet him. I said,
"It was great to briefly meet you on wednesday. It is funny how small of a world it can be. I find ____ type work very interesting, especially in ___. It would be great to learn more about your work specifically in the region. I would also love to learn more about opportunities at ___ you mentioned an internship program. I mentioned to my dad that I met you, he told me to tell you "hello" for him. Once again, great to meet you.
He quickly responded:
"Nice to meet you too, ___. Keep checking our web site. Applications for next summer’s internships should start in about February or so…
How should I respond to this? Do you think its a good sign?
Does it sound like a bad sign. He pretty much handed the internship on a silver platter. Just don't royally screw up and it is yours.
Maybe something like .... Thanks again and I will keep checking the website. Maybe in a few months reach back out to him to say hello and reconnect(he will likely forget you so it is good to reconnect....even though he knows your dad).
While he didn't do that explicitly the fact he mentions he should apply to internship when it is online I think is a sign that he will go to bat for him. My guess is in future conversations he would hand it to HR, but as of now no hiring.

He knows who I am doing an internship with now pretty well, maybe that is why he didn't ask for resume. Plus, recruiting for next summer doesn't start until winter so maybe there is no need to send resume yet. How/When do you think I should follow up with him?
I assume your dad does not stay in touch with this guy.
How did things end with alumni? Will you be meeting him again, left it off with email? You should follow up and thank him for meeting with you and introducing you to his MD.Has alumni seen your resume?
I would contact around December and then when you see internship post. I might contact towards end of summer depending on above.Really all a give and a feel. He is MD so he is busy but you need to keep yourself on his radar without pestering.
No, my dad doesnt stay in touch with him at all. I emailed the alum and thanked him for meeting and introducing me to him, but he hasn't responded. He mentioned in our meeting that we could go out for drinks sometime next week. Should I take him up on that? He has not seen my resume by the way.
Not taking him up is a slap to the face. Maybe try to weave in about resume at some point.
What is age differential between alumni and yourself?
Just remember puking in the bathroom does not help your career nor your image.
Reason why I mention alumni age is to see what he thinks of you. A friend or does he see it as alumni helping out his school. Just something to think about.
When February rolls around let him know you're planning on applying and ask him how you can best position yourself for an interview. If he likes you and can help, he'll ask for your resume and help push you through, or maybe make a note of your app to HR.
