homeless in NY

I am about to graduate MBA and go back to work in the city. To kill my loans asap, I am planning on living on my uncle's couch up in the Bronx. He says I am welcome as long as I want, which I think I will ride for 4-6 months, if not longer.

Anyone have any clue how this will work with taxes? Since you have to report an address? I will technically be homeless, for the second half of 2013 and in the first half I have been living near my school which is outside of the U.S. Also, I will not only be at my uncle's house, but also other friends from around Philly, Jersey, etc. So I probably would not want to use his address either.

If you're a foreigner, you file taxes as a non-resident alien. If I'm not mistaken, you also don't pay NYC taxes (which is great). If you do live in the US and have a residence in another state, you report taxes under that state's tax code, which really is awesome.

I am a U.S. Citizen, but I do not belong to any state as far as I know. I lived in NJ for less then a year, then NY less than a year, then France/Singapore for last year.

I think you can still pay taxes in your home state. They might be much lower which is nice.

Can someone confirm this for sure? I am thinking about transferring to NYC and prefer to pay the tax rate for my state. My residence is in Virginia, so would I be exempt from even NYC's city tax as well?

If you're working FT in a different state for over one year, you will need to start filing taxes there. I'm not sure what the exact rule is, but you can't get away with that for long.

Also, OP, use your uncle's address. I have no doubt he'd be fine with that if he's okay with you crashing his couch.
