Hong Kong Summer Internship as Exchange Student

Hello everyone,

I am an exchange student currently in Hong Kong until May 25, coming from Italy (I do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese). I am extremely interested in an internship in the banking/finance sector in Hong Kong this summer.

First, is it possible to get an internship as an exchange student, and therefore requiring visa sponsorship? If so, what would you say is the best way to succeed in landing the internship?

Thank you !

Based on the most helpful WSO content, securing a summer internship in Hong Kong as an exchange student without Mandarin or Cantonese proficiency can be challenging but not impossible. Here are some key insights and actionable steps:

  1. Language Barrier: Many firms in Hong Kong prioritize candidates with strong Mandarin skills, especially for roles involving client interaction or translating documents. Without Mandarin or Cantonese, your options may be limited to roles that are less client-facing or in product groups.

  2. Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is a hurdle for exchange students. Some firms may be hesitant to sponsor visas for short-term internships unless you bring a unique skill set or background that stands out.

  3. Networking: Networking is critical in Hong Kong, but it can be tricky. Based on previous WSO threads, reaching out to bankers with a more westernized education or background (e.g., those who studied abroad) may yield better results. Focus on alumni from your home or exchange university who are currently working in Hong Kong.

  4. Target Firms: Look for international banks or firms with a strong presence in Europe, as they may value your European background and education. These firms might also be more open to hiring non-Mandarin speakers for specific roles.

  5. Tailored Applications: Highlight your unique strengths, such as your European perspective, analytical skills, or any relevant experience in finance. Make sure your resume and cover letter are tailored to the Hong Kong market.

  6. Alternative Locations: If opportunities in Hong Kong seem too limited, consider exploring internships in Singapore, where English is the primary business language, and the finance sector is also robust.
