How Hard is it to get an Interview for a Quant Trader Internship?
I'm looking to be a quant trader, and was wondering how hard it is to get an internship. I go to an ivy (but not hypsm), and have good gpa. Would that be enough to get an internview offer?
If I had made USAMO (i only made AIME), would I have an easier time getting an interview/job offer?
I think you'll definitely get interviews (also depends on what you major in - best would be math or computer science); passing is another ordeal.
Imagine two people are exactly identical in math/probability skills, its just that one of them made USAMO, while the other accidentally bubbled incorrectly and missed out.
Would the person who made USAMO have any advantage over the person who didnt? Such as easier time getting an interview? More leeway during the interview if he gets a question wrong?
I don’t think the person who made USAMO would have any advantage (maybe in getting an initial interview at DE Shaw or Citadel, since both prize Olympiad awards). Certainly they would not have an advantage in the interview itself. The prevalence of USAMO qualifiers in trading is simply correlatory.
OP sounds like a fine candidate who will get interviews at most of the major shops. Quant Trading interviews are generally much easier to secure (and harder to pass!) than their equivalents in competitive industries like IB and Consulting.
Is this thread wrong? Everyone in this seems to think getting an interview itself is near impossible.
Like the previous reply said, provided you have a good GPA, it's not that hard to get an interview. All that matters once you get it though is your performance on the questions.

getting interviews means passing the tests. Getting the test is basically guaranteed, but passing the test is harder. Going to an ivy doesn't really mean anything because they really test for competence. Are you a math/cs/physics major? That would matter more. I've also seen you on Reddit and you should work on your personality, you do not come across as someone I would want to work with. I get having a goal but when you come off as too strong it gives crazy vibes more than passion.
