How Many Internships Should I Have For IB Internship Recruiting?

I just finished up my first-year at UCLA and plan to recruit for IB internships this upcoming winter. For context, I'm an economics major and have a 3.8 GPA. My original plan was to complete a remote IB internship at a small bank this summer, then find another finance related internship for fall quarter. However, the IB internship I was planning on doing got pushed back to the fall, so now I don't have anything for the summer. I've tried finding other internships on searchfunder and emailed a bunch of firms to see if they had any openings this summer but haven't had any luck so far, probably because it's pretty late into the summer and the firms looking for interns have likely already filled those positions. I don't want to do 2 internships at the same time fall quarter unless absolutely necessary because my course load is gonna be kinda heavy. I was wondering if having just one internship in investment banking is enough to be competitive for sophomore year recruiting? If not, is there anywhere other than searchfunder that you guys recommend for finding internships? Thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the number of internships for IB recruiting:

  1. Number of Internships:

    • It's common for successful IB candidates to have multiple relevant internships by the time they recruit. This can include internships in investment banking (IB), private equity (PE), hedge funds (HF), venture capital (VC), or other finance-related roles.
    • However, having just one solid internship in investment banking can still make you competitive, especially if you can demonstrate strong skills and relevant experience from that role.
  2. Alternative Internships:

    • If you can't secure an IB internship, consider other finance-related roles such as boutique private equity, asset management, Big 4 corporate finance, or valuations. These can also be valuable and relevant experiences for IB recruiting.
    • Internships in corporate finance at Fortune 500 companies or roles in sales and trading (S&T) or wealth management (WM)/private wealth management (PWM) can also be beneficial.
  3. Finding Internships:

    • Besides Searchfunder, you can explore other platforms and strategies:
      • Networking: Reach out to alumni, attend finance-related events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.
      • University Career Services: Utilize your university's career center and job boards.
      • Finance Clubs and Organizations: Join finance clubs at your university, which often have connections to firms looking for interns.
      • Cold Emailing: Continue emailing firms, but also consider smaller, lesser-known firms that might still have openings.
  4. Balancing Internships and Academics:

    • It's important to manage your course load effectively. If doing two internships simultaneously during the fall quarter is too demanding, focus on securing one strong internship and excelling in it.
  5. Timeline and Flexibility:

    • Keep in mind that many major banks have limited positions for sophomores, so don't be discouraged if you can't secure an IB internship immediately. Focus on gaining relevant experience and building your resume for junior year recruiting.

In summary, while having multiple internships can be advantageous, one solid internship in investment banking or a related field can still make you competitive. Utilize various platforms and networking opportunities to find internships, and ensure you balance your academic workload effectively.
