How much power does an MD have?

Guys,
I'm trying to network my ass off talking to MD's in Linkedin to see if they could at least see my professional profile a good fit for his/her firm. But I really don't know how much they can do, given that they are just the directors of the firm. Do you think that if they like you, they can manage more or less to get you hired?

Thx!

You'll find many (don't know about most) basically want to help and like being asked (if you're not a jerk about it). Not surprised the COO provided contacts.

Once you get to the stage where you're speaking with folks, I would always be closing for next steps. At the end of the conversation, tell them how appreciative you are for them sharing, taking the time, etc. Let them know you're interested in pursuing opportunities with their firm (they know but you still need to tell them and ask) and ask them something like this, "I'm really interested in X, if you don't mind me asking, if you were me, what would be the best next steps? How would you handle it?

S/he'll tell you what you need to do, who you need to speak with and likely connect you to get you started. If they really like you, they will promote you internally but you still have to wow everyone along the way and the firm will use it's routine hiring process. No shortcuts (unless your dad plays golf with a hiring manager or something like that- then it's more about checking boxes)

Everyone goes through HR. I'll give you the best case assumption. An MD vouches for you and gets you to a superday. You then get an interview and people don't vote for you after it's done. The MD then says "we should really hire xyz because whatever connection" but it'll never be so explicit. This is a pretty rare case given my running assumption is people who aren't getting the analyst and associate vote during the superday tend to not be the best fit. Doesn't always yield the best career but hey you got a voucher? Use that shit

I would approach it in some other way, MDs can vouch for you but many times it takes them so many time, remind that BB banks have long procedures.

For example whenever I get a CV sent I have it to HR, then call the CRO and then contact HR to explain why this guy deserves an interview.

Most MDs will not do this if they dont fell in love with you or if yoy dont have some kind or connections (friends, alumni...).

Thats why your safe bet would be spending that tine reaching Associates as they have enough pull to get recommendations ahead and are more willing to help people / have more time.

In any case do even network with analysts they will introduce you people from the team, dont think that aiming MDs will hire you, they have the same pull as other VPs, Associates they can only get you interviews. Then you will have interviews with Analysts / Associstes and they will decide if you go to the Assessment Centre...

Your advice about networking with more than just MDs is true but I wouldn’t say that it is “time consuming” to get someone an interview.

If you like a candidate you reach out to HR and tell them (refer them) and that’s about all you have to do. Each bank/firm is different, but my experiences have always been pretty quick.

As others have said it is also true that MDs can get you interviews but not the job.

Can tell you that many BBs have been pushing for "fair policies" that help to ensure that there is no hiring based on connections (even if it will keep happening) which makes the process more time consuming as there are some calls / procedures to be filled. Nevertheless every firm is a different world, I just know how it works in the 2 BBs I have worked for

Funniest

One time I saw a bottom-bucket A1 hand my MD a pitch deck with the wrong font on the front page. My MD closed his eyes and put his hands on his temples. I thought oh no, this is it, he has finally lost it from the stress. It was just then that a laser beam shot from his forehead and hit the shitty A1 in the chest, disintegrating him on the spot. My MD is a powerful, powerful man.

If I already have a 1st round lined up with a company, is there any benefit to reach out to an MD at the company (not in the same group as the role, but in an ancillary group)? I didn't realize that one of my contacts that i had networked in the past moved to a PE fund that i already have a 1st round for. The consensus seems to be MDs only have enough pull to get you a phone screen, so not sure if there's any use in doing so

Always makes sense to make that extra call. You have no idea who this MD contact knows, interacts with, etc. If S/he likes you, they will help you. If nothing else, connect you to others who can help.

Networking is an ever going process, not an event. You don't "do it" and you're done. You build your network and stay in touch because life is fluid.
