How Should I Network with MBA Students/Grads?

I have read multiple threads, where people have suggested reaching out or networking with current MBA students/graduates and adcom members to strengthen your MBA applications. As someone who lives in NYC, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do so if my target schools are in the midwest? Should I be reaching out via LinkedIn or attending networking events?

If anyone has had success networking prior to submitting applications and was subsequently accepted into MBAs, I would love some insights into the process!
