How to choose where to work in a bank

Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a unique situation. I have a graduate contract with a BB, initially set to work in equities, but since I signed, the position I was supposed to go into is no longer available (at this point you can probably guess what bank this is...). Now, my contract is still valid, i.e., I'm still coming on next year as a graduate, but HR is trying to relocate me within the bank. I've been asked which areas interest me the most and I'm pretty confused about it all. I don't have a financial background - my degree is in mathematics and economics, but my economics background has been mostly mathematical game theory focussed. I would like to work in a hedge fund or private equity one day, and do research (maybe?). I tend to gravitate towards research or trading because I'm good at maths and I think I'd be good at modelling, but I also want a career path with large potential returns. I'm pretty social and not opposed to talking to people, so M&A seems a good fit for me as well. I'm just looking for some help to shed some light on which positions I should try to push for since I've sort of got free reign here (I'd still have to interview but it would be to see more of a cultural fit into the team), and don't want to waste such an opportunity. Thanks in advance!

This is a very interesting position you're in. It seems that you want to position yourself with the best exit strategy as possible to transition to PE or an HF from what I see. Your undergrad degree is in the right ballpark for what they are looking for nowadays at these funds. I suggest reading up as much as you can about what each division's role is, what exit opportunities look like in each division, and even try talking to some alumni if you can. M&A is a great option for getting deal and modeling experience, and typically thats a common option for those looking to transition like you are. Don't just take my word for it, but just try to read up on it as much as you can to see what fits for you.
