HR is starting to worry me, do I throw a hail mary during an upcoming chat with an MD?
Hi everyone, just to preface this is coming from a place of anxiety so am bracing myself for the flurry of MSs.
With that said, for some context, I'm currently in the interview process with a bank (full-time) and I'm confident that I'm one of the last candidates that they're considering. After digging through the posts here I've noticed people have interviewed as far back as a few months ago, and I believe some offers have been sent out already. I managed to land an interview about 1-2 weeks ago so I still have a few rounds to go, but HR hasn't been the most responsive and I noticed the firm took down the posting recently. During my initial screening they also mentioned how few spots were left, so part of me is worried they've already decided on my candidacy or that I might end up getting ghosted altogether.
The silver lining here is that I have a 30-minute Zoom call coming up this week with one of the MDs who also happens to be an alumnus. So my question more broadly is: should I be a bit more direct during that call given the situation? My initial instinct is no, but curious to hear everyone's perspectives, especially from those who have been in a similar situation. How would you go about this?
So many questions. First off, how the hell are you a certified Analyst 2? This reads like a college kid question.
Aside from that, two other questions: is this an interview or is this an informal coffee chat that you arranged via email?
If it’s the former, you’ve been on a waitlist and now this is a final interview with someone who’s likely vouching for. For Christ’s sake, do not live a bad taste in this guy’s mouth. Be on your best behavior and don’t question the process. You love the bank and the product / coverage he (sexist lol) specializes in.
If the latter, not sure why you did such a thing but like I said, you’re on the waitlist. In which case, absolutely throw the “hail Mary”. Honestly, it’s more like four verts since he’s an alumnus MD. Could go to bat for you like I said. People rarely make it off waitlists organically.
Godspeed.
Thanks for the response. Your first question is fair, and as you've pointed out I am a college student lol. Honestly not sure how I got that tag, but I've been on wso since my freshman year and have uploaded reviews to the company database so maybe that's how.
As for your remaining questions, this is an informal coffee chat. I actually emailed this MD prior to receiving an interview invite many weeks ago, and he didn't respond until just recently. For additional context, I do have an interview scheduled with an analyst later this week, but as I mentioned I'm not that far in the process so a superday won't be for at least a couple more weeks. I have been getting delayed responses which is the main area of concern for me, but do banks typically schedule r2/r3 interviews for candidates that are on a waitlist? I feel pretty prepared and am confident I can do well on the interviews, it would just suck if they're stringing me along so I'm trying to think of the best way to leverage this connection I have with the MD.
They wouldn’t schedule interviews for you with an analyst if you were on the waitlist, I think I might’ve inferred the MD call was the interview you had scheduled in my drunken stupor from last night.
I think you can casually bring up that you’re in the interview process. Although, it might be wise to scope out how the call is going before mentioning it (you should go in expecting that the MD will forward feedback about you to HR, so treat this as a front-footed interview where you ask thoughtful questions and take (fake) interest in their coverage).
You shouldn’t worry about the delay in their responses if you have an interview scheduled. Just how some of these big banks are; not worth reading into.
"After digging through the posts here I've noticed people have interviewed as far back as a few months ago, and I believe some offers have been sent out already." - What banks are you talking about?
