IB Staffer

Can someone explain how to find the staffer? Everyone on this site says its important when networking but it seems like its a Where’s Waldo game. I feel like its weird to say “Hey dude btw can you connect me with the staffer?” at the end of a networking call. Also, it’s not like people put “Staffer” on their LinkedIn.

So, why are staffers so important when recruiting, what position are they (I’m guessing Associate or VP), and how can I find them?

Cheers

Most likely will be a VP but some are senior associates. They're the ones who are involved heavily with interns and analysts and the staffings they'll be working on. At some firms, they are even heavily involved with recruiting. Depending on the firm and the culture, an analyst probably won't pass you to a VP like that. However, I've always been connected to staffers by MDs who I've networked with. An MD who gets a good impression on you can pass you to a VP much easier. In terms of finding them, you would have to be lucky reaching out to a VP and that they answer. Other than that, you would have to network.

When they refer you to someone that's semi senior, say oh, is that the staffer? That should get you the answer.

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.

In my experience, you don't need to talk to the staffer. When I networked for placement I just talked to a bunch of the analysts in the group I wanted before placement day and due to the volume I spoke to, that got me through to placement day.

That being said, once I was there if I really liked a candidate and they had spoken to some other analysts, I would proactively put them in touch with the staffer.
