Ideal pathway to IB?

What’s up WSO. Always appreciate the help.

This summer I am working at a community bank. It was the best internship I could get from a very non-target school. However, I’m transferring to Vanderbilt next year and plan on stepping up my internships.

I understand I should be aiming for BB or EB internships after my junior year, but what type of internships should I aim for after sophomore year? I’m thinking MM or regional boutique, but I sincerely have no clue.

Thanks!

Most MM banks likely will not take Sophomore Summer Analysts. A couple of BBs will take diversity sophomore summer analysts. Boutique sophomore internship is possible, although it’s not likely you’ll be doing much more than shadowing, admin work, and maybe some basic modeling.

I recommend an internship in the finance department at a well known company or a PWM internship. The firm I got my SA offer from loved that my Sophomore internship was unique and with an F500 company, especially since it was different from everyone else’s PWM internship. I was using excel 90% of the time at this internship, got comfortable with all the shortcuts, and was able to talk about the impact that I made. definitely recommend

If you want to intern at a boutique for your resume, schedule you’re classes in the afternoon and work at the Boutique in the mornings during the semester
