Intern sent a harsh email to HR regarding house party

Hey guys,

I'm doing an internship at a Foturne 50 company. Some of the the interns went out last night, and my roommate apparently sent an email to HR about the party. I'm not exactly sure what could be the worst care scenario, but it seems like HR would not care about personal conflicts with the interns. I'm freaking out because I dont want to be kicked out of the internship. Should I reach out to HR and ask if everything is okay? I'm talking to my roomate today after work, but I think he already sent the email.

A certain pejorative that starts with an “f” and ends with a “t” comes to mind for aptly describing people like your roommate.

So I ended up being interrogated by HR for an hour about that night. Told her about my perspective and even said it was an overstatement by calling this whole this an 'incident'. She told me that if I get in the way of my roomates not sleeping enough then it may cause them to be unprepared for work, and so it's my fault. The HR person was barely listening to what I was saying and some of the stuff she repeated back was straight up wrong. She documented literally 2 pages of notes about this, so apparently there's going to be more talk... I'm still annoyed about this whole thing.

Yea she looked at me like I was such a bad person for staying up until 12:30 having a few drinks before a workday even though everyone in the office gets fucking crazy about happy hour by 3pm. Not sure which one is worse.

>She told me that if I get in the way of my roomates not sleeping enough then it may cause them to be unprepared for work

Meanwhile she decides you to pull you out of work to lecture you on something that's none of her business...and people wonder why no one respects HR

In fairness, if this kid sent a complaint, they probably have to follow up. I think this whole situation is stupid, but the tattletale is the one in fault. F500 is pretty by the book, sadly.

Only way I see this as an issue is if they put you up in Corp housing and you’re behavior caused an issue.

If this is outside of work, in an apartment you pay for, HR has zero business.

Since this is an internship, complaining will be counter productive, but i would make sure everyone back on campus knows about this kid. I’d black ball him.

Jesus, what a ducking bitch. Emailing HR because of an off work issue. Is he going to email HR if the dishes aren’t done.

Yes its Corp Housing. No way I'm staying here after the internship, but I can't get kicked out halfway. I sent the HR bitch an asskissing email and asked her about the forward process. I cant do anything about my roommate now. I want to deform his face but that will be counter productive as well. As of now I can just say fuck it if I get fired and explain it like this to my next employer.

Ahhhh corporate housing.

Yeah, wait until the intenship is done. Print out all those HR emails. Start networking for another internship and job.

I’d make sure to Black ball the kid on campus. Fucking pussy. You can’t and shouldn’t stomp his face, but shit like that is why people should get beat down. This backstabbing behavior needs swift punishment. Sadly his parents didn’t do that to him.

HR has to take everything seriously. Especially when it involves interns in corporate housing. It sucks but it is what it is.

Just my 2c but it's probably best not to attempt to minimize to HR. Just say "I understand. I'll speak with him about the situation ASAP and resolve it." They know he's acting like a child so be the adult and you'll come off looking better than him. If he pulls some shit again then it's probably ok to put your foot down and say, "I've tried to be respectful and accommodate his requests but this is getting ridiculous. We're all adults here and I haven't broken any rules. It's just as much my room as his." Or something to that effect. Basically, if you show that you're making an honest attempt at accommodating your roommate and he still complains to HR then it's going to look like he's the real problem. If you respond to childish shit with excuses then you're going to look like the problem.

FWIW, I think your roommate is a douche and you did nothing wrong. You're going to have to deal with people like him your entire working life so best to learn to handle it in the best way possible now.

When the HR asked me about what my next steps were moving forward, I told her that "communication is key to any relationship" and that "I will do my best to accommodate and come to a compromise". I havent spoken to him yet, and I don't think HR will give me shit for giving him the silent treatment like the little boy he is. I literally have a follow up next week. I'm picturing all the HR partners sitting in a roundtable picturing me raging and discussing what to do about it.

Make sure everyone knows what this kid did and just ice the shit out out of him going forward - don't help out when he's slammed, throw him under the bus as needed, make sure you volunteer him for shitty tasks by saying "he has bandwidth", make sure he knows you're purposely leaving him out of social / group events, etc.

What an asshole and he should be treated as such.

Edit: Look for anything to complain back to HR about - did he make an off color joke, anything that could be construed as sexual harassment, racism, etc.? Ex: If he calls something "retarded" / "gay", go straight to HR immediately.

HRs job is to protect the company. I imagine they are taking this a bit more seriously as the incident occurred in corporate housing.

Guy is still a little dick

That's what is bothering me. If HR can find one reason that I might be harmful for them in the future, they won't think twice about telling me to packup and go home. The culture here is a little bit more relax and not so up the ass, so hopefully they let me loose with a warning.

Your roommate has some serious balls. Gotta respect it.

It doesn't take courage to whine and cry to mommy. Literally babies do that. If he had balls, he would've went to sleep and not given any fuxks cause he has more important shit to worry about than deciding on what font type to use when sending his tattling email

Have you confronted this guy directly yet? You need to inform him that getting HR involved marks his record in the same way that it does yours, which is not a good thing. He's now on-record as a liability who will go to authorities/hire a lawyer/sue at the drop of a hat. Companies don't want that kind of exposure in their employees. He probably won't get an offer because of this.

As soon as you mentioned that "teeny tiny" caveat that you're in corporate housing, I think your argument blew up.

As a word to the wise, I think any direct confrontation is just going to look bad on you. Best case scenario you call the kid a bitch or something and feel good for maybe 30 seconds. Worst case dude goes to HR again saying you confronted him (I got news for you, if he does, you're for sure going to catch the axe). Suck it up, move on and get through the internship as judiciously as possible.

And to be clear while not super egregious, you're the one in the wrong here. Definitely better ways to handle the situation on the part of your roommate, but at the end of the day it's work housing.

yea the corporate housing is why HR is taking this so seriously. I'm trying my best to dodge the axe. After HR explained that we need to work together to make sure everyone can perform their best at work, I softened up and began to be super understanding. That was when I knew I wasn't going to win the fight. I sent HR a sweet email saying how much I want to represent the brand and be at the firm. Yea, technically I am in the wrong. Does that mean they will kick me out of the intern program immediately? That's what really frightens me. If they do I won't have a problem telling it to another recruiter who understands, but I don't wanna sit on my ass for the rest of the summer.

Good stuff, sounds like you're taking the right path here, and I assume you'll be fine. If you're still there after Friday (they usually let people down easy on Fridays for non-violent stuff) you'll probably be straight. Good luck, and if you end up getting sacked (which I hope this doesn't come to), I would go back and delete this thread, you've already given enough info to where if someone wanted to they could pretty easily figure out where you work (even worse case - think about if your roommate is on this site and finds it).
