Internal Interview

Hi all -

I've been trying to make the move into another department within my firm (boutique shop) and I've been getting some traction. The head of the department and the head of HR both are on board with my transition and are helping me with my move. I sat down with my potential boss yesterday and it turned out to be kind of like an interview, which I wasn't too prepared for. I know this person quite well, so the conversation went smoothly. I have two questions for you guys: 1) Should I be writing a thank you e-mail to this potential boss of mine? If yes, should it be formal, or considering I know them well, could I just write a quick thank you? 2) What else, from my side, can I be doing to help the transition into a different department?

Disclaimer: don't know much, if anything, about internal transfers.

In my opinion, since you know the person quite well, I think it'd be appropriate for you to send a thank you email (but a somewhat casual one) reiterating how much you'd enjoy working with him/in that department etc. I don't think there's any scenario in which that can hurt.

Send him a thank you note - make it casual, but not too casual, don't let it seem like you're trying to write casually.

OP: another thought- pretty sure it doesn't apply, given the time you posted the question and the fact that you say you interviewed with your potential boss yesterday- but obviously don't send a note 3 days later. if you're going to send it, do it now.
