Internal Lateral?

Currently working at a MM coverage team. Like my team but not passionate about the sector and would prefer to do tech then move to pe afterwards. 
 

My firm has a strong tech group and I have a couple friends from uni there. They told me the group has a few analyst seats open after this summer and I was thinking of trying to move internally. Does anyone have experience with this / can provide any advice?
