Interviewing FT | No Summer Internship | Good Interviews but no Conversion
Hi Monkeys,
It's only now I realize how dire my predicament for fulltime recruitment. Although on first glance, my resume looks acceptable - mediocre GPA and strong initial finance experience. But I did little except learn and practice for my Junior summer. For the interviews I'm getting, they seem to mistake my sophomore and seasonal internships for my Junior summer one, and only realizing during the interview that Junior summer I had nothing.
When deciding who to move forward, I've come to believe no matter how good my interviews, teams will pass me over no matter how well I do. I can cook technicals and behaviorals. Does anyone have insight how FT offers are given out? Would you bet on such an untested candidate? Because I think in the big picture I'm the one who's cooked.
I ask because I just finished some interviews where I thought I cooked the questions, but the hole in my resume is just so glaring.
Thanks!
You need somebody to want to hire you which is what a lot of people don’t get. You amongst many other others probably performed equally as well in those interview processes, but one other kid probably had a better relationship with that team and had somebody pulling for him throughout that process. That’s how I and many other people broke in. No this doesn’t mean nepotism, it means that you’ve worked beforehand and have somebody who wants to push you forward to get you on the team. If you’re cold applying, and just going through the process you’re not gonna get hired. Remember this is a relationship business.
Appreciate the insight. I guess I'll have to try a bit harder for the processes that are still early or haven't started yet. Would you recommend networking further with the companies that I'm already interviewing for right now?
Sometimes certain offices I'm in the process for don't have alumni, but other ones do. With siloed recruiting systems, I find it hard to network with people from far off offices.
Depends on the kind of relationship you have but as the saying goes the earlier the better. Get in early, stay connected and by the time it comes to apply you’re ready. You need to have that person actually want to hire you, they can’t just be someone that is passive and happy to talk to people to provide guidance. They need to say, “I’m going to help you get on this team”
I guess I'm cooked for the current interview cycle haha. Better luck life lol
